[Abstract] The present study analyses, in general terms, the civil liability carriers’ insurances and, more specifi cally, the civil liability freight forwarder insurance, as regulated under present Portuguese Law. As there is today no general obligation for carriers to conclude a civil liability insurance, the freight forwarders’ insurance might work as an “umbrella” insurance, which, under the client’s perspective, could substitute the carriers’ insurances. However, the terms under which the Portuguese legislator has established such an obligation and defi ned its range of cover have risen several perplexities, which we intend to analyse in this occasion
